SKYE TERRIER PERSONALITY

This is taken from the STCA handbook /1990. It was written in 1942 by
Mrs. Marjorie Adams of Canada, one of the grande dames of the breed.
It is still a valid summary of the character of the Skye Terrier today.

"As a house dog and pet he has much to recommend him: he needs
less exercise than almost any other terrier to keep him in health and
condition. He is watchful to a fault, is shy of strangers and resents any
interference of their part. He craves affection and companionship and
generally devotedly attaches himself to one member of the household,
to whom he clings like a silent gray shadow.

A Skye detests being fondled and hugged and will allow none but his
loved ones to take these liberties. He is more sensitive to rebuke and
punishment than most dogs and will nurse resentment to those who are
unjust or unkind to him with an almost human plaintiveness which
demands immediate reconciliation. In the house he is quiet and content
unless aroused, and will sit for hours by his master. This loving, faithful,
adoring companionship gives his owner the greatest comfort and
delight."

The Skye Terrier is not a breed for everyone. They require careful, early
and continuing socialization to properly shape the independent
personalities valued and respected by those who have molded the
breed for the past 500 years. Don't let the fact that they're short-legged
dogs fool you. Ours are full size dogs, just on short legs.

A Skye is an extremely proud dog, very loyal and protective to those
who he feels deserve his affection. They are sensitive, but never
submissive. The Skye is in no hurry to prejudge people; the most
effective way to get to know one is to play with him at his own game,
and ignore him. They also have boundless memories and, however long
between meetings, remember friends or foes for better or worse. Unlike
most other terriers, the Skye does not look for trouble: however, when
antagonized, he is a fearless adversary.

A Skye is very selective as to who will receive his deep affection. To
have earned the respect and affection of a Skye Terrier is surely one of
life's greatest pleasures.
